Choosing the right knife

Chain knife is standard for OPP/PET/Metalized films. Hot knife (Steinemann technology, E4 or L-series) is recommended for high-volume metalized PET, PVC, and BOPP at premium print quality. Disc knife is the E3 mid-tier option.

MTM-E or MTM-L — which film laminating machine series do I need?
The MTM-E series is the multi-functional high-speed line for growing converters: five configurations (108E, 108E3, 145E, 145D, 165D) at 1080–1300 mm working width, up to 80 m/min on calibrated stock, paper 150–500 gsm, film 10–25 μm, with Siemens PLC and HMI, Schneider switchgear and Becker vacuum. The MTM-L Leader series is the premium line for printers serving luxury cosmetics, premium publications and high-end commercial print: 108A, 108C, 130C, 130D, paper from 100 gsm, film from 6 μm, a premium feeder geometry that handles sheets down to 350×350 mm, and optional Steinemann (Switzerland) hot-knife separation. In short: choose L if you run thin films, small or light sheets, and jobs where surface finish is the product. Choose E if your work is mainstream commercial and packaging lamination at volume.
Which working width should I order for my offset press?
Match the laminator to the press that feeds it, not to the largest sheet you have ever run. The 1080 mm class covers B2 and half-format work — sheets up to 1080×1080 mm or 1080×1450 mm, pairing with Heidelberg CD/SM 102, Komori L40, RMGT 9 and similar (MTM-108E, 108E3, 145E, 108A, 108C). The 1300 mm class covers B1 and full-format — sheets up to 1300×1450 mm or 1300×1650 mm, the standard configuration for Heidelberg CD/XL 105, KBA Rapida 106, Komori Lithrone GX40 and similar (MTM-145D, 165D, 130C, 130D). Maximum sheet length across both classes is 1650 mm. If you are running two presses of different formats, tell us both — the sizing decision is usually settled by your minimum sheet, not your maximum.
Chain knife, disc knife or hot knife — which separation should I specify?
Chain knife is the standard separation and is correct for the majority of OPP, PET and metalized film work. Disc knife is the mid-tier option, supplied on the E3 configuration. Hot knife — Steinemann technology, available on the E4 configuration and across the L series — is recommended when you run high volumes of metalized PET, PVC or BOPP at premium print quality, where a clean thermal separation protects the edge finish on every sheet. The knife choice is a configuration decision made at quotation stage, so it is worth stating your dominant film type before the specification is fixed rather than after.
Which films and paper weights do these machines handle?
The platform covers water-based, thermal and pre-glue coated film lamination — BOPP gloss and matte, soft-touch BOPP, OPP-Matte, MPET and PVC. Film thickness 10–25 μm on the E series and 6–25 μm on the L series; paper 150–500 gsm on the E series and 100–500 gsm on the L series. Overlap precision across the range is ±2 mm, and maximum lamination speed is 80 m/min on calibrated stock. If your job mix includes soft-touch or thin metalized film, say so at enquiry — that combination is what usually moves the recommendation from the E series to the L series.
Is film lamination the same as flute or cardboard lamination?
No — they are different processes on different machines, and the terminology causes real specification mistakes. A film laminating machine bonds a thin plastic film (BOPP, PET, PVC) onto a printed sheet to protect and finish it. A flute or cardboard laminating machine bonds a printed top sheet onto corrugated board or paperboard to build a structural panel for boxes. Many converters eventually run both: film lamination to finish the printed sheet, then flute lamination to mount it.

Payment terms: 30% T/T deposit, 70% T/T before shipment. Production: 40–60 working days from receipt of deposit, confirmed at quotation. Shipment: by vessel to St. Petersburg or Novorossiysk, typically 35–45 days transit. Certification: CE as standard; EAC conformity for the Russian Customs Union is arranged through our partner HD RUS LLC (Khimki, Moscow region), 30–45 days, included in the standard project schedule.
